the ludwigskirche church at langensteinbach, by the architect friedrich weinbrenner, has been refurbished to meet the langensteinbach community's increased need for concerts and church services. particular prominence was given to the use of lighting in the refurbishment project, trying to learn from the lighting deficiencies experienced previously in the building.
the previous lighting only produced a general, diffused light, which created glare and as there were no stained glass windows, the church lacked any accent or effect lighting even by day; the dark coloured flooring produced a strong contrast in luminous intensity with the light coloured walls and the centre of the nave was not adequately lit. in the light of all these observations, Viabizzuno's ‘mosaico' light fitting seemed to offer the solution that was most in keeping for a lighting scheme appropriate for the whole church interior;
the mosaico fittings enabled the light coloured columns of the nave to be used as reflective surfaces for the fluorescent tubes, while the spotlights with QR111 lamps, fitted into the same fittings, light the church pews. the height calculated for the installation was based on the proper balance to be created between an accentuating and evocative light suitable for religious celebrations and one that was uniform and precise as required for reading.
the aisles were lit and made to appear wider by means of a suspended ceiling fitted with downlights and a lateral track.
because of the flexibility required by the size, type and location of the choirs, the illumination of this area has been achieved with ‘mosaico terra' light fittings.
the rapid completion of the project and the satisfaction of the users are confirmation that the design ideas and careful study of the lighting have made the restoration of the premises both successful and practical.
