herbert hamak installation
place:castelvecchio, verona, italia
project:installazione herbert hamak
lighting project:marionanni
to recover a monument in its entirety, rediscovering its original form and its symbolic significance within a city greatly changed over the course of time: such was the aim of the restoration work which engaged the museum of castelvecchio and which has made possible the creation of new exhibition spaces and the preservation of works of art. the very recent re-opening of the mediaeval walkway of the museum gave an opportunity to present a spacious installation by herbert hamak, a kind of thread to link past and present. the installation consists of a series of 18 panels four metres long, fixed astride the battlements: structures in resin and pigment of a most intense shade of blue, the ultramarine blue so often used by the artist in his creations. the installation was designed to interact with natural light in an architectural and historic context of great significance. in the evening, special led spotlights for outdoor use positioned between the crenellations create unique, spectacular effects, dense luminous blue blades positioned on the battlements of the palazzo, many sentries in the dark nights of verona. hamak's installation is intended to be only minimally invasive while interacting with space, with the city, and with the imaginative dimension of the place which houses it. Herbert Hamak was born in 1952 in Unterfranken. He lives and works in Hammelburg.
