the new headquarter of the innsbruck university chemical, pharmacy and medicine faculties is undoubtedly one of the most relevant projects recently realized in austria within education and research fields. the 10 institutes of the faculties have been brought together in a unique site close to the river inn. the decision to bring together the faculties was based on the need to rationalize the urban built environment surface, so to save a significant surrounding outdoor area, reachable on foot or by bicycle. the project was developed in the tyrolean capital by the din a4 studio and shows a strong spatial regularity in the indoor architectural elements. unlike this strict inner spatial rhythm, for the new structure this exactness is interrupted. the lighting design enhances this more informal architectural approach, thanks to the Viabizzuno light fittings. to valorise the faculties outdoor area have been chosen those of the palo di zurigo type. the project scheduled that the street lamps in question would be employed by establishing a more playful, informal, bucolic outdoors. so placed in the resting areas, and divided by zone, the street lamps generated illuminated areas with a warm and comfortable light flux. the light coming from the source of any of these fittings becomes warmer thanks to the respective copper reflector discs. these are the elements which allow it to reach the surrounding surface with a soft beam that defines a small, comfortable ‘island’ designed for the meeting, the comparison. thanks to this type of light, in the evening hours the urban space turns into a place of study and socialisation, ‘breaking’ the institutes walls and creating a synergic link between the inside and the outside of the faculties. if it is true that innovation comes from laboratory, it is also true that ideas and intuitions can come from anywhere, and that dialogue, also the informal one, is often the starting element. the Viabizzuno light fittings, contemporary in an equally contemporary environment, ensure that this place is not isolated from the city context, rather an element that inserts itself in the innsbruck social life, by livening it up.
