the project for the new como-brunate cableway, originally opened in 1893, is the outcome of a series of studies and insights that started in 2011 by the mya studio, which involved the history of the two concerned town (como and brunate), a deep knowledge of the vehicles which came first the cab 12 and 13 and the opinion of who ‘lives’ the cableway: passengers and technicians. since the first analysis it became clear that the funicular directly overlooking lago di como not only performed simply a connection function between the two locations, rather also one of the most important panoramic means for the total fruition of the lake landscape. along with the information collected the mya studio developed a project in accordance with the historical context and original environment, and able to repropose, as far as possible, the old interior layout, as requested by the users. art nouveau style lives on the outside of the glass in the sights, the rivets that run along the outside of the carriages, the arched shape of the entrance doors. brick red, ocher yellow and mauve have been finally chosen as the chromatic representatives of the end of nineteenth century cultural context in which the cableway was designed. lines and colors in the inside mark a more neutral ambient, in order to accompany the fairly slow and gradual unfolding of the surrounding landscape. neutral colours, such as cream and chocolate, are enriched by special elements such as hatboxes, the railing side that unites the five compartments, and the column pulpits that hide the technical controls. research and innovation are the key words that characterize the lighting design of the interior and exterior spaces of the funicular. the entrances and the exits are illuminated uniformly by the fluorescent profile c2, the steps mount zero led spotlights recessed in the ground, while the final part of the whole glass carriage is illuminated by a pair of zero led to light grazing to the floor, so as to ensure safety and at the same time an excellent visual comfort of the outside also and especially in conditions of poor natural lighting, leaving the passenger maximum visibility at night on the suggestive lights of the lake. the accesses outside the cab were illuminated by placing an illuminating cast bronze body designed by the mya and engineered by Viabizzuno, by using for every body three leds and spotlights zero with the correct optical Fresnel lens so as to ensure a good illumination of access without creating at the same time any glare. for front projectors and rear ones were instead used the Viabizzuno light fitting cubo 316L in burnished stainless steel, wired with a central white led and with high luminous flux and narrow optical that serve as a headlight and red perimeter leds for the function of rear light in the gear side.
