the challenge of converting a former industrial space into a multipurpose environment for domestic and professional use without completely altering the powerful original formal features resulted in a ‘subtle’ project focused on characterising the new environments with dedicated features, while preserving perception of the unitary wholeness of the original space and its characteristics.
the project conceived for said spaces by architect simona pieri from the firm dspaa, desanctis pieri architetti associati, rome, is based on the idea of dividing rooms by juxtaposing neutral volumes inside the original container to create the effect of juxtaposed white boxes that are inserted but not fused into the main hall.
from a formal standpoint, the design of the new rooms, as with the stairs, is reduced to essential lines. matter and the basic shape of spaces prevails, while the original elements are intentionally maintained and enhanced, like a second soul: iron beams and ceiling vaults.
artificial light enhances and underscores the shapes of the spaces, and the optical white of the walls develops into a varying depth effect.
the floor lined with wide oak slats materially contrasts with the rigorous white of the spaces, while the stairs, conceived as an ideal synthesis of simple shapes and prevalence of materials, unfold through the simple juxtaposition of oak steps, free of a structure, with the parapet reduced to a mere sheet of transparent glass.
the architect plays with empty and full spaces, lightness and mass, at all levels. the closed volumes of the rooms project over the stairs with their compact shape and, by contrast, stand on a slight row of sliding doors that recall the delicate Japanese style with frosted glass and oak wood to allow natural light to penetrate even into the most internal spaces.
the project for the spaces is completed and perfected by Viabizzuno's expert study of artificial light. overall lighting of the rooms is achieved with m1 fully concealed ceiling recessed light fittings, while some surfaces are lit by the grazing light of the net parete. tom ginocchio track spotlights are installed on iron beams to enhance overall lighting in the main hall.
the interplay of projecting volumes is, instead, underscored by long slits of light obtained with the special workmanship of sistema 094 and led profilo c2. the latter is continuously used even along the row of sliding doors. finally, the insertion into the back wall of the lamp taglio with its blue led light profile closes the architectural composition.
