‘wine is a mixture of mood and light’. galileo galilei among umbria vineyards, arnaldo pomodoro designed a wine cellar-sculture for castelbuono estate, owned by lunelli family that for years has been producing important wines from an ancient grape, the sagrantino of montefalco, already known in ancient rome. an architecture at the service of wine and its ground, a treasure of flavours conceived to integrate with the landscape beauty, so realized with the shape of a big turtle that emerges from ground showing its exterior cover, the carapace, symbol of stability and longevity. the carapace represents the cohesion between ground and sky and unveils itself to the visitor not only like the place where grape turns into wine but also as a convivium, architectural artwork dedicated to tasting and good living. the exterior structure is characterized by a copper covering marked by furrows and cracks that reflect the ground nature. other used materials come from trentino, homeground of the client family: the laminated wood, that is the real structural element of the whole artwork, and the porphyry from valle di cembra, used for the interior path and for those around the cellar. illuminating the carapace set two challenges: designing an architectural light able to enhance the structure and the matter, creating luminous scenographies, and at the same time providing a functional light suitable for conservation and tasting of wines. for this reason all the used sources have a high colour rendering and a screen for uv rays. in addition, in the barique cellar the led sources don’t emit ir rays. light lays on surfaces without being visible: inside the wood structure there’s a lighting from on high using special recessed Viabizzuno spotlight, adjustable and with metal halide sources with different voltage, 35W and 70W, and 3000K colour temperature. hidden behind special closure masks, the projectors, individually adjustable, can mount some special accessories to limit dazzling, like the louver, or can spread or reflect the light with fresnel lenses or mirrors. the spotlight recessing points have been conceived according to the variable declivity of the dome, looking for the best solution both from a technical-functional point of view and an aesthetic one. hidden in the central structure of the floor furniture, it has been designed a downlight using 12V track spotlight with 35W halogen dicroic sources, with variable opening beams and 3000k colour temperature. a continuous relationship between warm and cold shade guides the visitor for the whole path to the barique cellar: the atmosphere is enriched by Viabizzuno special recessed and ceiling light fittings for the accent light of the stair. every single luminous element is at the service of architecture and nature, contributing to define around arnaldo pomodoro’s sculpture a narrative dimension that help the visitor to understand the complexity and the magic of the intervention: nature and artifice are focal points of this artworks that looks ancient, though original and with a contemporay shape, like the umbria ground.
