exhibition ‘dream dresses. the school of italian costume designers’
place:palazzo braschi, roma
project:gian luca farinelli
buyer:fondazione cineteca di bologna
lighting project:luca bigazzi, marionanni
foreman:enrica serrani
palazzo braschi, a baroque – neoclassical jewel overlooking piazza navona, hosted the first major exhibition devoted to a century of fashion history in the italian cinema, curated by the cineteca di bologna film library. more than 100 original outfits were on display along with dozens of sketches, objects, drawings, photographs, historical documents and film sequences. outfits from the oscars like those of the master piero tosi (academy honorary award in 2013) and milena canonero who, after winning three statuettes (for barry lyndon, chariots of fire and marie antoinette) earned an oscar for best costume design in 2015 as well with the film the grand budapest hotel. the exhibition aimed to overcome the stereotype of a mere costume gallery to bring out the sense of a school, a national tradition of craftsmanship - one of designers and tailoring workshops - that has helped make both italian and international cinema great. the exhibition takes you from the clothes of the stars of the silent screen to those of the great beauty, via the costumes of war and peace, of sofia loren in marriage italian style, alberto sordi in the marquis of grillo and claudia cardinale’s unforgettable crinoline outfit in the leopard. the costume display has also been enhanced with a lighting scheme by luca bigazzi, one of the most respected directors of photography on the contemporary scene (he was director of photography for the great beauty), achieved in cooperation with Viabizzuno; the lighting, naturally screened, creates a play of light and shade which gives back the fabrics and colours their cinematic vitality, reminding us of the illustrious actors who wore them and of their lives.
