henke schreieck’s award-winning austrian architects, who boast recognitions such as the grand prix d’architecture of the city of vienna, the adolf loos and piranesi awards, and recognitions for the neues bauen in den alpen, took on the challenge of the erste campus project with great professionalism and serious care for the surrounding environment.
they based their idea on suspended volumes to generate the overall impression of an easily recognisable composition. the built bodies with their vertical separations and their positions help the campus become a part of the town and the town a part of the campus.
the vision for the erste campus project is a transparent architecture that opens up towards the city, an inviting corpus in its connection with nature.
the lighting design is based on the idea of interlacing and intermeshing the various items in a common visual component. the internal yards and garden areas are essential parts of the light concept and contribute to the transparency of the large glass surfaces even in the evening hours.
creating a luminous landscape also means to give continuity to the building structure, fluent passages and consistent shape with the installation of the luminaires and their formal characterization.
luminaires have been distributed in the ceiling starting from the huge two-storey entrance hall and from the covered space in front of the structure, with the arched shape of its space bordering surfaces, to ideally reflect the notion of free shape. the lamp ‘il tondo’, with the masked geometry of its light beam and the multiple and varied use options with 1, 3, 6, and 12 spots, is the ideal lighting solution for the foyer and adjacent meeting rooms, restaurants, coffee bars and areas to be used for events.
the luminaires ‘il tondo’ with 6, 12, and 3 spots, liberally distributed in the foyer, wonderfully meet the lighting requirements for such a demanding and ambitious space. the use of a high number of small units grouped in ‘il tondo’ lamps with 12 and 6 spots provides comfortable lighting with no glare, but an extremely natural effect.
the project theme also includes outdoor areas with graz posts (round style) positioned in a scattered arrangement to brighten green areas, squares and streets. for the lighting of terraces and the facing streets, the façades have been provided with ‘san martino’ wall mounted lamps, which, with their asymmetrical and calibrated light beams, are particularly adequate for these kinds of environments and do not disturb the offices located across the street.
a linear profile has been selected for connection pathways and the areas characterized by a linear structure, with direct/indirect c100 lighting to add, along the walls, the lighting of ceilings and walls by transforming the entire architectural structure into a great luminous body. the c100 profile, with its essential and sober look, could be perfectly fitted and adapted to those linear structures and paths.
the erste campus has coffee shops, restaurants, and large spaces where the 4,500 ca. people who will work there in the next years will share part of their time. for coffee shops and restaurants, characterized by different kinds of ceilings and different architectural notions that reflect the multifaceted character of the urban landscape, the architects used ‘il tondo’ lamps again, in the versions with 1, 3, and 6 spots. luminaires with 6 light spots create a visually clear centre, while those with only 1 light spot create a warm and bright ambience in the dining rooms with the golden light of their spotlight.
wallwasher c208 systems have instead been used for the walls and sales areas of the bakery, so as to enlighten the goods and the walls.
‘il tondo’ and the c208 series allowed the designers to create a visual ambience capable of wonderfully highlighting the architecture and meet user and visitor requirements with excellence and comfort.
the idea of the luminous landscape extends throughout the building up to the executive floor, the areas dedicated to the events and, of course, also the great and roomy meeting and conference rooms, where ‘il tondo’ have been selected as suspension lamps with direct/indirect light beams, and again wallwasher c208 items for the areas bordering the spaces, splendidly wood panelled.
