the project consists in expanding a residential building and is intended to be seen as an opportunity not only to re-qualify the existing house, but also to initiate a dialogue between the new volumes and the place. the context of the building is characterized by green surfaces and by the presence of a forest. the expansion requires the construction of a new pavilion to house an indoor swimming-pool, a solarium and a panoramic room, the ‘cirmolo’ wood room. the new addition is perceived as a natural extension of the settlement, without any clash between the old and new parts, to be integrated with the natural slope, so that the settlement in the soil follows the natural shapes and ensures visual continuity to the ascending slope on the side of the forest. the need to renovate the roof of the house to adopt a ventilated roof solution and the intention to build a new pavilion in the garden have been combined with the choice to the use a very durable natural material: a zinc-titanium alloy. the double pitch and the bottom of the rectangular volume that houses the swimming-pool are drawn by light cuts with sealed luminaires, specially positioned to facilitate maintenance operations. swimming is a great passion of the owners. the activity is accompanied by a light that does not disturb the eyes. when someone is swimming all the lights of the ceiling are switched off and a grazing light is switched along the skirting (16.64 ip68), so as to border the pool and the walking space around without bothering any other person that is swimming, for a perfect enjoyment of the swimming-pool. a clear light guides the ascent towards the upper area of the land to culminate in the panoramic room. this is entirely coated with cirmolo wood and only the landowner has the key. the choice of this noble wood is linked to its multiple properties: the wood of the pinus cembra tree (cirmolo) is a very precious one, being particularly recommended for sculpting and, in the past, it was mainly used to build furniture, closets or stove coating, because people had noticed that the clothes stored in wardrobes made with this wood were preserved better. today cirmolo is mostly used to build beds and cradles, due to its capacity to ensure good rest, and in wellness applications. cirmolo wood contains vitamin c, essential oils, resin, turpentine, pine nuts and, according to popular traditions, it has a positive influence on the human mind as it transmits patience and a capacity to remain focused on one’s objectives. the room completely coated with this essence is a space devoted to silence, where the scent of the wood accompanies the guests’ time dedicated to rest. here light warms up and is dense or just whispered, materials are authentic and shapes are essential.
