the white room

a cube: it's black outside and white inside. this is why mario nanni's design for the first 100% light exhibition (held in London in september 2006) was called ‘the white room'. formal simplicity is the basis of this project that has sought to eliminate any superfluous architectural gesture and allow the visitor to concentrate exclusively on his experience of light. white and black are by no means a random choice: black represents the absence of colour and white the combination of all the colours of the spectrum. understanding that the whitest possible light is generated by the whole set of colours of the spectrum is an abstract concept, but in that room it becomes tangible. the visitor is bathed from head to toe in colour, in all those he sees on the floor: he steps on them and the room is tinted with the colour on which the footprint is left. it becomes a walk through colour. a playful and dynamic way of understanding that light generates colour and liv (variable-image light bulb), the luminaire installed in the white room, is the right means of making the light in our homes vivid, emotive and able to change when we want according to our degree of sensitivity. visitors enter this area one by one and in walking over a light spectrum, composed of colours of every wavelength, from red to indigo, passing through every shade of orange, yellow, green and blue, they switch on the variable-image light bulb. this is not just installation, but lighting design, an experiment in which, for once, it is not the light source to be tested, but the way in which we react to it.
