in surry hills, a creative and fashionable suburb of sydney, a playful, irregular and colourful façade, like a jacques tati film, appears at 19 waterloo street. it is a private building which has been used for a wide variety of purposes over the years and has now been given a new lease of life thanks to the architectural intervention of sjb studio in sydney.
five levels from the basement to the rooftop, for a total of 69 square metres. the special feature of this building is its vertical development, pivoted by the central staircase, an element that unites all the floors. thanks to its unique volumetric organisation, the natural lighting and aeration of the spaces are optimal, as is the dialogue with the urban life outside.
the property's propensity to create a distinctive, lively and creativity-stimulating environment is perceived not only by the colourful, never trivial and high-quality materials and finishes, but also by the fact that - during the construction of the building - artists were involved who created site-specific works, including a large painting that is also visible from the street.
in a context so stylistically defined and impactful, but also oriented towards energy sustainability, the lighting design moved along the lines of both aesthetics and technology.
sistema n55 turned out to be the perfect lighting solution thanks to its many versions and almost infinite customisation possibilities: in the living room, the large circular diffuser nh02 - designed by neri&hu for Viabizzuno - immerses itself in the room. in the bathroom characterised by the colour red, n55 parete with arm with diffuser kk01, designed by kengo kuma, illuminates the mirror and washbasin area.
from the living room to the bedroom, from the bathroom to the study - n55 provides illumination that differs from room to room thanks to the use of decorative glass, but is consistent in its very high quality and lighting performance with minimal energy consumption.
