koed-madsen residence
place:kolding, danimarca
project:casa koed madsen
the koed madsen residence is a tribute to modern houses. the architecture consists of simple geometry; the masonry division walls that comprise the structure are horizontal and vertical lines in white concrete, framing large areas of glazing, while an external staircase block connects the ground and first floors. the house is closed off on the northern side where there are few windows and open to the south, from where one can enjoy the magnificent view of Kolding fjord, visible from every room. a small adjoining outbuilding provides shelter for the cars. thanks to the large windows, the interior and exterior merge. by day the interior benefits from a view of the sea and the nordic scenery; by night it is the building and its lighting that become the object of attention. the walls hardly exist, apart from black stone dividing walls that create a unique environment that can be enjoyed in equal measure in every room, from the living room, on the ground floor where the office area is to be found, to the open terrace guarded by a glass balustrade. the unique environment matches the wish expressed by the client to have no barriers but the ability to move freely from one area to another. after all the general features of the internal arrangement were agreed, the external design of the building had to be determined. the house was designed in 3d down to the last detail, with continuous input and assistance from the owner. many suggestions were made before the design was finalised. no compromise was accepted, with the aim that the end product should reach the highest quality in every particular. although the view was the guiding theme of the design, even without it the house is an outstanding experience in itself.
