lighting project:ottanelli&manetti architetti, garbo luci e oggetti
the object of the intervention is a building complex just a few metres from the sea on the furthermost stretch of the bay of baratti, comprising a series of structures dating from different periods, set around the original nucleus of a seventeenth-century watchtower. the guiding vision at the basis of the project begins with the intention of enhancing the architectural and natural characteristics of the place, by careful cleaning of the seventeenth-century tower and restrained introduction of new elements and materials. these interventions are intended to make one multi-functional space around the stone wall of the tower where the various functions (entrance, bar and lounge) are opportunely screened and separated by vertical and horizontal elements: plastered walls, panels in translucent sea-blue glass, false ceilings in plasterboard, and floors in bronze-coloured porcelain-finish tiles and bleached oak planks. the old stone wall becomes the heart of the project, the point of departure and arrival, the link and differentiation between the various elements, the essence of the entire space. the lighting project was specially designed to enhance the characteristics of this important architectural element: m44 fixtures recessed into the floor, emphasising the materials with horizontal beams of light; and a ceiling aperture which separates it from the horizontal structure but acts as a unifying feature by means of the light issuing from the aperture. if during the day a large plate glass window allows to enjoy a beautiful view over the gulf, almost like the floor is floating over the water, at dusk the gaze is drawn gradually inwards, until darkness comes and the body of the tower, opportunely illuminated with horizontal beams of light from floor and ceiling, is revealed in its entirety, once more taking the central role in this composition which had been lost for centuries.
