atmosfera a cuneo
place:cuneo
project:duilio damilano
the clients decide to leave their nineteenth-century home in favour of a new house which would represent a new style of living and a new relationship with the surrounding environment. from a habitat characterised by micro perforations, imploded in the interior and with a rigid, formal organisation of spaces, to a contemporary house with ample transparency and with a central nucleus, the kitchen, which lends a feeling of great domesticity to the whole. in ‘atmosphere', then, the use made of the house counts more than the architecture. the house is situated in the plain of piedmont at the foot of the alps, and the plot where it stands is a long sloping stretch of land in which the building seeks a permeability of routes and visuals between interior and exterior. the house is developed on one level and adapts to the land by means of overhangs and pure volumes characterised by facing in ‘absolute black' stone which extends to the interior of the house, creating a continuous dialogue between indoors and out, accentuated by the great windows which make it possible to move from one space to another and to the garden at any time and which allow light to permeate throughout, signalling the path of the sun at various times of the day. in the kitchen the large windows grow smaller, becoming a horizontal slit which incises the expanse of black façade, accentuating the effect of the ray of light. the interior spaces follow a simple linear organisation: all the spaces begin and lead off from the fulcrum, the heart of the house, which is the kitchen and dining area. this particular design choice accentuates the hospitable character of the house, and the routes of passage from private and non-private zones are harmonious and well-employed. this domestic ‘personality' of the house is also a means of making less dramatic the use of the black stone which is so strongly evocative of berlin architecture. both outdoors and indoors, light has a scenographic function, partly owing to the use of vela lighting fixtures, and contributes to enhance spaces and forms, making evident ‘materialness', reflection and transparency of materials. every formal and component choice in this house recalls the strong desire for a dialogue with the world outside, so that the eyes are conditioned, obliged to look towards the horizon, educated to a love for the surrounding environment. ‘casa atmosfera', the atmospheric home, is the proof that in every form of settlement one must always be aware of the place one is occupying. vela: indoor recessed light fixture with double emission made of white or grey painted metal. it can be used in brick walls, thanks to the special wallbox, and in plasterboard. It takes R7s-114 mm 150W linear halogen lamps.
