english house
place:esher, uk
project:wilkinson king architects
lighting project:timothy fonfara
located in esher, surrey, this new building was designed by wilkinson king architects for a surgeon and his family. whereas their preceding house was a stereotype and gave no great importance to the relationship between light and space, the new building was designed to maximise the potential of the environment, so the comparison with the surroundings, characterised by huge trees, becomes a significant theme in the project.
observing the building from in front, a picture window stretching the entire width of the house is in clear contrast with the dark grey bricks behind it. to the side, the glassed façade of the building opens the ground floor to the garden, thus giving the impression of almost infinite space. the lawns slope steeply upward from the reflecting waters of the swimming pool, ending only at the horizon. as regards the interior of the house, the open space on the ground floor divides naturally into three areas: the family living room, the combined hall and dining-room, and lastly the more formal music room/drawing room. in the hall, a glass staircase allows natural light to enter from outside. upstairs, on the first floor, a wide entrance leads into the hall from which open the five bedrooms, each one designed to offer privacy in relation to the surrounding houses. the lighting project was designed in accordance with the clients' request for lighting which could diversify the living spaces and the rigid architectural forms. natural light too plays a large part in the design of the building: on the ground floor, the huge glass wall allows light to flow in naturally and fill the entire space; on the first floor a series of large windows and skylights allow the light to flow in waves while at the same time preserving the privacy of the living spaces. completely recessed ceiling-mounted m6 fixtures have been used throughout on the ground floor. along the central walls, where the clients display their collection of material paintings by patrick huges, two light fittings have been installed in purpose-build openings so as to be switched on independently if desired. the lights are mounted along a carefully-designed grille traversing the entire round floor. intelligent use of the electrical circuit makes it possible to regulate the lighting throughout the ground floor either as one space or as separate areas. sitting in the living room and looking out beyond the swimming pool, you notice the contrast between the flames in the fireplace and the backdrop of water behind the glass, as though the glass reached beyond the edge of the swimming pool. a collection of works of art is displayed throughout the hall on the ground floor. a series of completely recessed lights, each supplied with two concealed light inserts, illuminates both the works of art and the route through them. in the hall, the series of ceiling lights mounted on the same grille as those of the entrance, preserve the architectural integrity of the ceiling, and with the addition of one single spotlight, light is concentrated on the dining table. in each bedroom the m1 ceiling fixtures light the main walls, and when seen from the garden, create the same symmetry as those of the ground floor, as they are mounted on the same grille. etched satin-finish glass is used to soften the lighting and create a tranquil atmosphere. the lights beside the beds and the indirect lighting, including some wall net, separate the change in light source and allow great flexibility in use of spaces. just as the first floor juts out from the glass surface of the ground floor, the ceiling lights follow the grille from the interior towards the exterior space, allowing the living spaces and the architecture to become one harmonious whole. the glass borders seem to disappear, and the house to commune with the greenery outside, simply resting against pilotis lit from above. moreover, behind the swimming pool, two cubo wall fixtures create a pillar of light which, by means of a complex play of reflections, gives the water the same texture as the wall. in the garden, by contrast, the atmosphere created by the lights is subtle, from time to time a tree is illuminated to give the observer an idea of scale and perspective. the exterior lighting is homogeneously diffused to avoid distracting attention from the true central element - the architecture of the building.
