Not far from Milan’s naviglio grande, in an underground space of 170 square metres, lies Arnaldo Pomodoro’s labyrinth. Inspired by the epic of Gilgamesh, this monumental work was born in 1995 as a work in progress and represents a perfect synthesis of Arnaldo Pomodoro’s creative journey: from reflection on archaic forms of writing to the encroachment into the architectural dimension. In these hypogeal rooms of the former riva-calzoni mechanical workshop building – formerly the exhibition venue of the Arnaldo Pomodoro foundation and today the Milanese headquarters of the maison Fendi –the visitor is taken on a journey between myth and memory, in search of the roots of human experience. To start walking through the labyrinth is to immerse oneself in a suspended temporal and spatial dimension dominated by the warm, ancestral tones of bronze and copper. Respecting this intimate and intense atmosphere required a light design based on subtraction. Lisa Marchesi studio was able to both enhance the environmental work of pomodoro and make the entire system contemporary and more energy sustainable. The main design challenge from a technical point of view was mainly represented by the positioning of the lighting points, which could not be changed in relation to the existing one. The positioning on a track, which in turn was covered by a false ceiling with holes to allow the light beams to pass through, guided Lisa Marchesi studio with Viabizzuno to the creation of a special version of ecomini. The application of a telescopic arm and the possibility of rotating it on itself made this spotlight the perfect solution to adapt to the positioning and dimensions of the spaces within which the light would pass. Thanks to Viabizzuno’s technology, the use of ecomini has not only enhanced the details and materials of the labyrinth, but has also brought significant savings in terms of maintenance and energy consumption, improving the quality of the environment by burdening much less the electrical and ventilation systems. Each source can also be switched on, off or changed in intensity via the Viascenario app, Viabizzuno’s wireless lighting control system, making it possible to emphasise the most significant sculptures, create depth between volumes and create immersive environments in which light can interact with visitors, giving life to new languages of communication.
