the Allerton Lobby at the Art Institute of Chicago is located in the museum’s first and oldest building. it is the threshold visitors cross when stepping in from the city, whose identity is closely interwoven with that of the institute. the architectural transformation put into effect by the spanish firm Barozzi Veiga revisits this space with a series of site-specific interventions studied to bring out its most distinctive traits, precisely proportions, materials and light.
Barozzi Veiga, partnered by Viabizzuno, has designed and created a new light fitting, which blends into the coffered ceilings without impairing their unique characteristics. diversified levels of light intensity create flexible scenarios, which adapt to both distinct needs and times of day. the outcome is a familiar and transformed space, where past and present converge in harmonious continuity.
