the former Manfredo Fanti and Giuseppe Garibaldi Barracks stand on the site once occupied by the San Pietro monastery’s vegetable garden and orchard. these barracks were part of a military district that remained in use until the 1990s.
originally, in 1822, they housed the school for pioneer mathematical cadets, which trained engineers, architects, bricklayers, blacksmiths and carpenters in the service of the este court. designed by Sigismondo Ferrari and Santo Cavani, the complex exhibits an austere military classicism interrupted by a gable adorned with figures from architecture and mathematics. after being abandoned, the architectural firm of Silvia Giacobazzi was entrusted with its restoration. their plan aimed to highlight the original lines while preserving historical legacy and the paths were enhanced with an architecture of light that marked corridors, courtyards and gardens, emphasising the complex’s outsized dimensions and making it both familiar and evocative. the symmetrical garden and reconstructions of the clock, bell and skylights evoke memories of cadet life, integrating history, architecture and landscape.
Viabizzuno was involved by architect Silvia Giacobazzi in designing the lighting for the entire complex, including the garden, entrance halls and residential units.
the exterior was the first part to be completed: here, light plays a key role in creating an evocative atmosphere while enhancing the architectural features and clearly marking out the pedestrian walkways. silère marks the perimeter of the large garden along all the walls, including the external ones facing San Pietro’s church. the paths leading to the entrances, which run between neat hedges and flowerbeds, are illuminated by the subtle light of erste, while the grazing light of m18 enhances the historic masonry surfaces of the central courtyard of the complex under renovation and the abbey of San Pietro.
